We Were Meant to be Teachers!

Classroom Management Strategies and other Teacher Worthy Ideas

Parents as Servant Leaders

Have you ever wondered how you can teach your children to be servants and encouragers of others?

Bottom line?  They need to see you being a servant leader.  If you’re in education management, are you a servant leader?

I remember a Principal who would “lay the county law down” but rarely offered to help us achieve the new requirements!  The result was resentment, of course.

Now what can we parent/teachers do to help our children/students to become this type of servant leader?

I recently saw this post by Jennifer S. Miller that is a wonderful lesson to build this characteristic in our country’s next generation.

For instance, she says, “Parents as servant leaders prioritize and build trust as a critical foundation for their family’s interconnected relationships and individual successes. They are responsible decision makers, and they exercise sound judgment showing competence in what they do.”

Her basic premise is TO LISTEN FOR UNDERSTANDING first!  That’s hard for me, I know, and probably hard for you, too.  My administrative skills kick in really fast as I try to solve their problems before I even listen to their problems!

Ms. Miller sites “Robert Greenleaf, author of “The Servant as Leader” and management researcher who consulted with major corporations like AT&T and lectured at MIT and Harvard” in her post.  These same private business techniques can be used in our families

To take a few minutes to read this post and learn to be a better servant leader.  BTW, this is a biblical concept, too.

Parents As Servant Leaders is the mainstay of our business. As we teach in our workshops or when invited to speak at other seminars and workshops, we define Parenting as that of a Servant Leader. Why????
Because it is the most genuine and authentic definition of the role and presence of a Parent in the life of every child, every household and every community. Leading is serving versus being served. Our children and our families need leadership from Parents that know their role is to serve the growth and development of their child.

I love your comments and feel your strength and leadership in your words. I shared this article/post on my blog/Twitter/FB. Hopefully, you’ll receive some positive results and inquiries. During this time in our part of the world, we need to train leaders to be strong yet good listeners and helpers. A child is naturally “ego” centered. We parent/teachers have to mold this piece of marble to help improve our lives. It’s not easy and yet is our purpose to “pass the torch!” Thank you.
